Sekumpul vs Aling-Aling: Which Munduk Waterfall Should You Choose

Sekumpul waterfall in Buleleng, North Bali near Munduk

Both routinely show up on “best waterfalls in Bali” lists, and both are within reach of Munduk, which is why we get asked to compare them constantly. Here’s the real difference.

Sekumpul: the view

Sekumpul is a cluster of cascades dropping roughly 80 meters into a jungle basin — widely considered the most photogenic waterfall in Bali. The experience is mostly about the trek in (stone steps, a river crossing) and the payoff view once you arrive. You won’t be sliding or jumping here; a local guide leads you down and the goal is simply to reach the falls and take it in. See Sekumpul & Banyumala Waterfall Trek for the full package.

Aling-Aling: the adrenaline

Aling-Aling is a cluster of several waterfalls built around natural rock slides and jump spots — a 12-meter slide, and jumps ranging from beginner height up to a genuine 20-meter leap at nearby Kroya. This is an active, in-the-water experience rather than a scenic viewpoint stop. See Aling-Aling Waterfall Sliding & Jumping Adventure for details.

Which one should you pick?

  • Pick Sekumpul if you want the classic Bali waterfall photo and a moderate trek, without getting fully in the water.
  • Pick Aling-Aling if you’re comfortable swimming, want to actually get in the water, and don’t mind trading the “iconic view” for genuine activity.
  • Can’t decide? They’re roughly the same distance from Munduk but in different directions, so most guests pick one per day rather than combining both.

Still unsure? Tell us your fitness level and what you actually want out of the day on WhatsApp — we’ll tell you honestly which one fits better, rather than upselling you into the wrong one.

Side-by-side

  • Main appeal: Sekumpul is scenic; Aling-Aling is active.
  • Effort: Sekumpul needs moderate fitness for the steps and river crossing. Aling-Aling is more about swimming and climbing around wet rock.
  • Getting wet: light at Sekumpul unless you swim; completely wet at Aling-Aling.
  • Guide: a local guide is needed at both, and fees are paid on site.
  • Best for: photographers and general sightseers (Sekumpul); thrill seekers who swim well (Aling-Aling).

Safety and conditions

Water levels change what is safe, especially at Aling-Aling, so the guide decides which slides and jumps to use that day. In the wet season some river crossings run high or close, and we may suggest a swap. Aling-Aling is not recommended for non-swimmers or young children.

What about Banyumala?

If you like the idea of Sekumpul but want a swim, Banyumala is the easy add-on, since its twin cascades have a calmer natural pool. Read more in the complete guide to Munduk waterfalls, check prices in our driver price guide, and see what to pack for either trek.
