Complete Guide to Munduk Waterfalls

Banyumala twin waterfall near Munduk, North Bali

Munduk is surrounded by some of North Bali’s most visited waterfalls, and they are very different from one another. Some are a gentle forest stroll, one is a full-day trek with a river crossing, and one is built around natural rock slides and cliff jumps. This guide walks through each so you can pick the right fit for your fitness level, your group, and the season you’re visiting.

Quick comparison

  • Easiest: the Munduk, Melanting, and Golden Valley loop, an easy jungle trail that takes most of a morning.
  • Most famous: Sekumpul, roughly 80 meters of cascades reached by stone steps and a river crossing.
  • Best for a swim: Banyumala, twin cascades with a natural pool.
  • Most adventurous: Aling-Aling, with a natural rock slide and jump spots nearby.

Munduk, Melanting, and Golden Valley: the gentle loop

These three waterfalls sit in the hills above Munduk village and are linked by an easy jungle trail. None of the walking is technical, which makes this the best starting point if you’re not sure how much hiking you want to do. It also pairs well with a quiet breakfast by Lake Tamblingan afterwards. Our Munduk Waterfalls & Lake Tamblingan package covers exactly this route.

Sekumpul: the one in the photos

Sekumpul is a cluster of cascades dropping roughly 80 meters into a jungle basin, about 45 minutes’ drive from Munduk. Getting there is part of the experience: a dirt trail, several hundred stone steps, and a shallow river crossing before the falls come into view. A local guide is required at the site, and the guide fee is paid on the spot (roughly Rp 150k to 250k per person). Moderate fitness is needed, since you climb all those steps back out. See the Sekumpul & Banyumala Waterfall Trek for the full-day version.

Banyumala: the swimming one

Banyumala is a gentler twin-cascade waterfall with a natural pool that is actually pleasant for swimming, unlike Sekumpul’s stronger current. Most guests pair it with Sekumpul on the same day, using it as the cool-down after the trek. Entrance is roughly Rp 40k per person, paid at the site.

Aling-Aling and nearby Kroya: the adrenaline one

Aling-Aling is a cluster of waterfalls built around a natural rock slide of about 12 meters, with jump spots ranging from beginner height up to a roughly 20-meter leap at nearby Kroya. A local guide is mandatory because water levels change which slide lines and pools are safe. You will get completely wet, and it is not recommended for non-swimmers or young children. Details are on the Aling-Aling Waterfall Sliding & Jumping Adventure page, and we compare it head to head with Sekumpul in Sekumpul vs Aling-Aling.

When to go

In dry season (roughly April to October) trails are firmer and river crossings are shallow and predictable. In wet season the falls are louder and more dramatic, but trails get slippery and some river crossings run high or are closed for safety. We break this down month by month in Best Time to Visit Munduk, and our packing guide for waterfall trekking covers what to bring in either season.

How to choose

  • Traveling with kids or older relatives: the Munduk, Melanting, and Golden Valley loop.
  • Want the classic Bali waterfall photo: Sekumpul, plus Banyumala for a swim.
  • Want to actually get in the water and slide or jump: Aling-Aling.
  • Only have one day: pick one trek per day rather than trying to combine them. The distances add up on mountain roads.

Getting around

The waterfalls are spread out along winding roads, and Sekumpul and Aling-Aling are in different directions from Munduk, so a private car and driver makes the day far easier than coordinating transport yourself. If you want to mix and match stops, our Custom Driver Tour lets you build the route around what you want to see. For common questions about pricing and booking, check the FAQ, or message us on WhatsApp and we’ll tell you honestly which waterfall fits your group and the current trail conditions.
