Best Places to Visit in Munduk: Honest Guide & Recommendations

munduk

Munduk packs a lot into a small area: waterfalls, twin lakes, coffee gardens, rice terraces and hot springs, all within a couple of hours of each other. Below is an honest rundown of the best places to visit in Munduk and nearby, with who each one suits, how much effort it takes, and what to know before you go. We take guests to all of them, so the notes come from the road, not a brochure. Costs shown are entrance or guide fees paid on site, roughly, and can change.

At a glance

  • Best for families and easy days: Munduk waterfall loop, Twin Lakes, coffee gardens
  • Best for adventure: Sekumpul, Aling-Aling
  • Best for photos: Wanagiri Hidden Hill, Handara Gate, Ulun Danu Beratan
  • Best for a slow, relaxing day: Banjar hot springs, Jatiluwih

1. Munduk, Melanting and Golden Valley waterfalls

Best for: first-timers and anyone who wants a gentle walk. These waterfalls sit above the village and are linked by an easy jungle trail, so there’s little technical walking. Expect a relaxed morning rather than a hike. They pair well with a quiet stop by Lake Tamblingan afterwards. See the Munduk Waterfalls & Lake Tamblingan package.

2. Sekumpul Waterfall

Best for: the classic big waterfall photo. It drops roughly 80 meters into a jungle basin, and reaching it means a dirt trail, several hundred stone steps and a shallow river crossing. A local guide is required (roughly Rp 150k to 250k per person). It’s worth it, but you need moderate fitness for the climb back out. Pair it with Banyumala for a swim: Sekumpul & Banyumala Waterfall Trek.

3. Banyumala Waterfall

Best for: swimming. Twin cascades into a natural pool that is much calmer than Sekumpul. Entrance is roughly Rp 40k per person. Bring swimwear and a dry bag.

4. Aling-Aling and Kroya

Best for: thrill seekers. A natural rock slide of about 12 meters, with jump spots from beginner height up to a roughly 20-meter leap at Kroya. A local guide is mandatory and you’ll get fully wet. Not recommended for non-swimmers or young children. Details: Aling-Aling Waterfall Adventure, and our comparison Sekumpul vs Aling-Aling.

5. Twin Lakes viewpoint and Lake Tamblingan

Best for: misty-morning views and a calm pace. The viewpoint on the ridge between Munduk and Bedugul looks over Lake Buyan and Lake Tamblingan side by side (entrance roughly Rp 20k per person). From there a short forest walk reaches the Tamblingan shoreline, where you can take an optional traditional canoe ride (roughly Rp 100k per person). Mornings are cooler and less crowded.

6. Ulun Danu Beratan Temple

Best for: the famous lakeside temple that seems to float on the water. It’s popular, so go early to avoid the crowds. Entrance is roughly Rp 75k per person. It fits naturally into the Twin Lakes & Ulun Danu Temple Tour.

7. Wanagiri Hidden Hill and Handara Gate

Best for: photos. Wanagiri is a hillside spot with swings and viewing platforms looking over the lakes, and Handara Gate is the split gate seen all over Instagram. It’s a short, easy outing, so it combines well with other stops. See the Wanagiri Hidden Hill & Handara Gate Photo Tour. Expect queues for photos at the gate in peak hours.

8. Coffee and clove gardens

Best for: a low-effort, local-feeling stop. Munduk’s cool climate suits coffee and cloves, and you can see how they grow and are processed, then taste the coffee. Read more in A Guide to Munduk’s Coffee Culture or book the Coffee & Clove Gardens half-day.

9. Jatiluwih Rice Terraces and Batukaru Temple

Best for: sweeping green scenery away from the beach crowds. Jatiluwih is a UNESCO-listed rice terrace landscape, and Batukaru is a quiet mountain temple in the forest. It is a longer day on the road, so plan it as its own outing: Jatiluwih Rice Terrace & Batukaru Temple Day Trip.

10. Banjar hot springs and Buddhist temple

Best for: unwinding after waterfall days. A half-day pairing of natural hot springs and a Buddhist temple in the Banjar area, well suited to tired legs. See Banjar Hot Springs & Buddhist Temple.
